Makoto Shinkai’s film, Suzume no Tojimari, occupies fourth place in the list of the most successful anime films of all time, pushing One Piece: Red to fifth place which was released last year.

Suzume no Tojimari is ranked 20th in the ‘Top Movies’ category on the MyAnimeList website.

With over US$256.18 million (Approximately Rp. 3.76 Trillion), Suzume no Tojimari is the fourth highest-grossing anime film of all time.

This is largely due to the Chinese market, where the film has already reached US$104.89 million (Approx. 1.54 Trillion), the first Japanese film to reach this mark, and US$107.44 million (Approx. 1.58 Trillion) in Japan.

The biggest film market could move from Japan to China for the first time in history.

Suzume no Tojimari has also increased its revenue in South Korea to US$34 million (approximately Rp. 500 billion) and Taiwan to US$7 million (approximately Rp. 102 billion).

Both are impressive numbers for both countries. In addition, the next film that Suzume no Tojimari has to surpass in the history list is his older sister, Kimi no Na wa (Your Name), with US$380 million (Approximately Rp. 5.57 Trillion), with the help of the Western market.

The film premiered on November 11 in Japanese cinemas, in American theaters April 13 yesterday, and Crunchyroll will soon announce its screening on its Streaming Platform.

Production team:

Makoto Shinkai (Kimi no Na wa, Tenki no Ko) is directing.
Masayoshi Tanaka (Kimi no Na wa, Tenki no Ko) is designing the characters and Kenichi Tsuchiya (Kimi no Na wa, Tenki no Ko) is serving as animation director.

Synopsis Suzume no Tojimari:

“On her way to school one day, Suzume Iwato came across Souta Munakata, a young man searching the abandoned areas. Suzume was directing Souta to the nearest ruins, but because of his curiosity, he himself decided to go to the same destination.

Arriving there, Suzume finds a door that stands alone which is beyond belief, but she cannot enter. A strange rock lying on the ground nearby turned into a cat-like creature and ran away when Suzume picked it up. Suddenly terrified, he returns to his school, unaware that his act of leaving the door open will have consequences.

With the release of the ‘keystone’, evil in other universes freely escaped and wreaked havoc on Japan. Intending to right her wrongs, Suzume joins forces with Souta, whose true goal is to prevent evil from festering by finding and locking all doors that open before Japan is destroyed.”
